Crimes in Times Journal contains the stories of the three major cases that made the lawyers famous enough to be involved in the Billings Murder trial told in Palmer’s book, To Spend Eternity Alone. There is the story of the 1871 robbery of a bank in Waterford, in which the thieves stole $443,000 ($40,000,000 today). The magnitude and audacity of the crime is only exceeded by the tale of what happens after. There is also the story of a mass murder in Cambridge where five women from one family tragically died. It was called the most horrendous crime in the annals of the county. The other story is that of the murder of a one-armed man in Albany. No one knew the man and he was buried before he was identified. The lawyers involved in these cases earned recognition as some of the most outstanding trial lawyers of their day.
